--this is a copy of a reply I made to some misquotes on cafe.daum.net.

First, let me say I'm more than a little surprised to find out I'm the topic of debate....
but now that I am I will not sit back and let people misquote or misconstrue what I say.

I did say most of those things.

BUT, the individual sentences are taken from a larger whole. Most when taken a line at a time look bad or at least selfish, but when taken as a part of the whole they make sense and show my frustration with the situation.

That being said, the quotes are also out of order which again makes me look selfish or uncaring. That could not be further from the truth.

If I were to guess when this conversation took place, it would be Wednesday the 12th. I had come down to my class and was removing the signs that get posted all over the windows by my room. I do this almost every hour. The difference this time was another teacher saw me and, in a bit of emotion, got upset and said that I did NOT have the right to take signs down.

This was probably not the best way to ask me to stop. I finished my clean up and had a few words with the teacher and went to class. (BTW, later that afternoon I had a very nice conversation with the same teacher after he had calmed down. He agreed with me that I have the right to clean my area and try to protect my students from being disturbed) I was not my usual happy self as I walked into that class, and I admit that I was probably a little emotional myself. Since some of the class had seen what happened I decided to turn it into a teaching tool.

This is where many of the quotes came from.

The Quotes:

The situation does suck - no problem there.

I don't care about this. - taken out of context. I, and other foreign staff, have asked repeatedly for the "union" teachers to explain to us what happened. They haven't. So, so I blindly follow the masses and proclaim all is bad and the school sucks? No, no I do not. Do I know the principal's side of the story? No. So same argument, do I follow that side and say "The union sucks"....no no I do not. Therefore I'm left in one spot...the spot of no opinion and not being ABLE to care.

If this was a disadvantage to me I would care...So I don't care - You missed the point on this one. If it directly affected me, I would care of course, but it does not. That's not true. It does affect me. My classes and schedule are disrupted. My students are distracted. It is not good for them, so it is not good for me. But again, can I choose a side? No, I cannot. So I choose my side until I know more.

"Whatever they do, I don't care" - no real idea what the context was on this one. You say it made you upset. You should have talked about that. Your English seems good enough to hold a real conversation. I wish you had.

On the students can't change the school - this is again taken in the wrong way and you missed some important points. Student's hold a great deal of power in a Korean private school. BUT that power is wielded through your parents. They pay the bills, they can force issues. Where you cannot change things is through demonstrations that are growing more and more hostile. A quote from a favorite book of mine goes "a person is intelligent, rational, but people are stupid" Mob mentality is not efficient, it is unthinking. It is emotion. Act as the individual to effect change.

This is Stupid - think your quote was pretty right, but let me add a bit. From the view of someone that can't get any information, the whole situation looks pretty stupid. It is also very frustrating because this is the kid of thing that I love to study. This would have been a wonderful case-study for a master or doctorate degree in Inter-personal relations or political science (my main field of study). You have 6 groups-Administration, Union teacher, non union teacher, 2nd and 3rd year students, 1st year students, and parents...and none of them are talking to the others. It's a great case of how NOT to run a dispute.

Lastly, The Fake emotion quote. From the outsiders view, as I said before saying that, all the demonstrations, all the yelling and chanting, all the tears a week after the teachers were fired....well it looked a bit fake. It looks manipulated and created. That is my opinion as an outsider to the whole situation. Maybe I'd feel differently if I had the facts, but I wouldn't know as no one has given me any.

So, I post this, knowing full well that this will also be misread and misquoted. If you want to talk to me about it, you know where I am 45-50 hours a week.

Oh and to the replies: Sorry to disappoint you, but I do have my opinions and if parents are calling for me to be fired (which I doubt, but stranger things have happened) because I have opinions, Well, include us (the foreign staff) and maybe we'll have an opinion you like.

Free speech is important, if you don't think so, ask your friends to the North what they think about it. I I fully support your right to say and believe whatever you wish and I hope you do the same for me.
